Jenny Judge Awarded ASA Dissertation Fellowship for 2021-22

The American Society for Aesthetics is pleased to announce that Jenny Judge (New York University) has won the ASA Dissertation Fellowship for 2021-2022. She was selected from among a very competitive group of twelve applicants by a review committee of senior ASA members.

Her dissertation, "Music, meaning and social life," is directed by Robert Hopkins, with Ned Block and Anja Jauernig. The abstract:

My dissertation defends a novel view of musical meaning, according to which music represents feelings by showing how they feel. Music thus works in the same sort of way as figurative pictures (which represent objects and scenes by showing how they look) and can be analysed alongside them. A consideration of music thus promises to augment our understanding of the nature of representation, and the varieties of it that exist.

She received a BMus CIT from the Cork School of Music, an MA in Philosophy from University College, Cork, and a PhD in Music from University of Cambridge before entering the philosophy program at New York University.

This is the seventh year for the ASA Dissertation Fellowship. Previous winners:
