2005 ASA Annual Meeting

The 63rd Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetics, hosted by RISD,
Providence, RI, 19-22 October 2005 represents a wide range of interests in aesthetics and the philosophy of art.

Sixty two papers were submitted for blind review, a slight increase from last year’s forty eight, and twenty nine were accepted for presentation. Nine invited panel sessions were organised, four of which were organised by members on the committee and five of which were the upshot of panel submissions. The Keynote Address was delivered by Christopher Rothko on “The Artist’s Reality: Mark Rothko’s Crystal Ball.”

The Committee followed the previous year’s scheduling of papers in dividing the mornings into sessions devoted to ‘colloquia’ – thematic clusters of three submitted papers, each given an hour and a dedicated commentator – and afternoons reserved for three-hour ‘invited panels,’ which varied in structure according to topic. Participants in colloquia totalled sixty four and in panel sessions totalled forty three persons.

Scheduling was done with an eye both to symbiosis between morning and afternoon sessions and with an eye to providing appropriate choice and contrast at any given point in the program. Strict instructions (for chairs, commentators and paper authors etc.) were issued in good time.
